His immune system will be more or less completely obliterated immediately before/after the transplant process, but after that it will be allowed to recover, albeit to a permanently weakened state. That's going to reduce its ability to respond to new threats in a timely fashion, so the more cells you can get producing antibodies before those threats show up, the better.

Basically, his immune system will be weaker, but still functional enough to benefit from the vaccine. Vaccines become even more important because his immune system will be weak enough to have trouble handling infections on its own.
