Too much of the Nazi Leadership were like Hitler, ordinary infantrymen in the Kaiser's army, who had little grasp of the full scope of the war. They prolly didn't realize towards the end, Germany had next to nothing when it came to natural resources to prolong the war. Just because the allies did not fight Germany in their own territory, they believed they didn't truly lose when the war ended and thought them accepting the blame in the treaty of Versailles was shameful.
Many of these esteemed generals like Guderian, Rommel, and so on were pushing for war just to erase the past of 1918. Little did they know the same issues that stalled the Kaiser with limited resource would do them in as well.
The Germans just were not ready against actual countries that can actually defend themselves.
