things not working out well for characters or places from the original game does not instantly equate to "shitting on the original"

chrono cross is a really dark game and a lot of its themes delve deeper into stuff that chrono trigger only briefly touched on like alternate timelines and the concept of predestination. but even then ultimately it has the same core ideal that if you try hard enough and refuse to accept the hand the world gives you, you can break free from your fate. cross' brooding leading up to its happy ending doesn't work without trigger's idealism as a contrast to it
