We've only had a real democracy since 1965 after the Voting Rights Act. There are elements that want us to have an authoritarian government and have been baking that cake for 50 years, Trump just gave them a reason to go full mask off.

The Republicans are a white nationalist party masquerading as a governing party. They see the demographic future on the horizon and are trying to cement white minority rule by picking away at the Voting Rights Act until it's a husk and make the process of voting arduous.

Homegrown facism getting a serious hold is not out the question. We are one election cycle away from seizing permanent one party rule and rendering elections moot.
