I'm not sure how familiar you are with adulting, but most people don't buy tuxes, they tend to rent them afaik. Like a wedding dress, there aren't many occasions to wear a tux. And keep in mind if you're a groomsman (the other big time you'd wear a tux outside of your own wedding), it usually needs to match the other groomsmen so you're not even getting a second use there.

(preface: I currently don't own a tux, or any proper suit) That's what everyone says at first, but it's good for every wedding you'll ever be invited to and any formal event that takes place after six pm (what are you a farmer?)

Know what's ALSO good for most formal events you're likely to attend? The normal business suit you wear to interviews and (depending on your profession) the office. Know what you don't wear to interviews and the office (unless you're playing a weird prank)? A tux.

Although a lot of people don't even go that far, and just use a blazer that matches a nice pair of slacks (or if it's a more casual gathering, one that offsets it in an stylish way).
