People think I'm kidding when I say I'm not really into movies or TV. I couldn't give you 5 plot lines from shows that mostly everyone has seen, like The Simpsons. TV just isn't my thing.

Granted I'm a bit of a movie buff so I'm a bit biased here, but to me there are some movies that are such culture touchstones it's almost - *ahem* - inconceivable not to have seen them at some point, especially when their dialogue becomes incorporated into everyday speech.

In a strange place? Guess you're not in Kansas anymore.
Trying to close a deal? Make him an offer he can't refuse.
Not enough room in your trunk? I think you're going to need a bigger boat.
Wife annoying you? Tell her that frankly, my dear, you don't give a damn (OK, maybe that's not such a good idea) <_<

I'm not trying to say Princess Bride is as classic as those four, but at this point it's as much a part of our culture, perhaps even moreso. And movies like these - aside from being terrific in and of themselves - are must watches to me simply because if you haven't you're missing out on a part of our common culture to which nearly everyone can relate.

Also, if you've never read The Princess Bride by William Goldman, it is also fabulous, albeit in a very different way (you have to read it to see what I mean). He adapted his own book for the screen and changed a good deal of stuff around through necessity. Still hilarious though.

Also worth reading/watching by Goldman: "Marathon Man" - awesome film with Dustin Hoffman, Roy Schneider and a very, very evil Lawrence Olivier. Goldman also wrote that screenplay adapted from his book, which has an excellent sequel too: "Brothers."
