I feel like if they do, it will involve smaller studios. Starting your own independent development company seems like a trend for major game designers these days, especially in Japan. Maybe some of them could save JRPGs.
and thats kind of what I was thinking, many of the people who grew up on ff7 and other ps1 era RPGs are graduating college and moving on now, and many of those people are computer science nerds with a love for game design. so I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing more and more of them in the upcoming years
