I think FFIX is only really overrated on B8. (And even then I don't agree with that assessment but you know what I mean.)
Among general FF fandom it's got one of those FFVI things going on where its hardcore fans think you're drivel if you don't worship it but otherwise it's often ignored.
Pretty much this.
I love FFIX and it constantly straddles the top 5 in the series for me but it's treated like FFVII is in the real world.
