Now that I've asked this question... it's kinda hard to answer. It seems like the future is America's, but Japan has a much richer past.
This is exactly right.
Japan's been the best for almost all of gaming's history, but they've been on a HARD downturn in recent years. American and indie developers (also western) are getting better and better, and will probably be the better source for games inside of 10 years.
All of that said, I'd probably still go with Japan. There's just way too much good stuff already out, you could go a lifetime just playing Japanese games that already exist.
