Yeah, the game has changed a lot since its initial release. But the game going free to play pretty much tripled the number of players (maybe even quadrupled), so there's tons of people all trying to learn the game too.
Soldier, Heavy, and Medic are all good beginner classes. Try not to pick sniper or spy if your team already has two. Spy should probably be the last class you try, in fact, since you want to learn how the other classes behave.
