Okay, I finally got past the bridge in MGS3 but I keep alerting guards in the factory so I stopped. I don't really like the idea of a stealth game in a wide open setting where guards can easily blend into the setting and can see you from miles away.
Unless you're just standing up in the middle of everything, they shouldn't be able to spot you "from miles away." If you're on the ground (especially in something like tall grass) with 80-85% camo index, they shouldn't be able to spot you unless you're close by and they're looking right at you (or you're making noise).
But setting off alerts in MGS3 is going to happen quite frequently, so don't let it discourage you because sometimes guards do sneak up on you. In the factory area, you can actually crawl underneath the factory and hide until alert goes away.
