Luckily that guy doesn't do anything important other than give you hints on where to go, but you generally should go around killing NPCs.
Except for one guy who you need to kill right away.
But I'll let you figure out who that guy is on your own.
Assuming it's the guy I think you're talking about, killing him is actually a terrible idea!
