I keep the bowl with a decent amount of food. Not full or else sometimes it just eats more because he feels like there will be more later. Keeping a limited amount of food makes him eat less and saves for later. *shrug*
As for the second thing, uh, cats do that. Why your cat just started doing it, I dunno, but it's not like you need to worry.
