The 3D on mine is always off. It doesn't enhance any of the games in any way really, unless you're into that sort of thing. It gives me headaches, personally.
You should try some games beyond like, OoT 3D; the 3D has improved significantly since, in my opinion. OoT and all the launch titles/titles that came with the games all gave me headaches, but Mario Kart 7, Kirby's Adventure, VVVVVV, Pushmo, and SM3DL have done absolutely nothing to give me headaches. Honestly, playing SM3DL without the 3D sucks.
