Death Note goes from excellent to only pretty good.
Also how I felt, and I read the manga first.
Coincidentally, I think the anime kind of makes the second half worse than it should be by not explaining/rushing by some points. And I think they completely left out the part with the American president, which I'm pretty sure created a plot hole. It's been a few years, I don't remember for sure.
