Going a bit off topic but not totally unrelated a acquaintance of mine asked me about my mum once and I told him "she's dead to me". I didn't want to go into great detail but he was like "You don't mean that so shouldn't say that" like it's some sort of foreign concept. I then asked him "What makes you think I don't mean it?" he then said "A lot of people say say that but they don't mean it".
