Agree. Watchmen was beautiful, though in fairness that was mostly because he pretty much copied the book frame-for-frame and added motion, but in double fairness that's precisely how you should make a comic book movie anyway.

But whoever decided his grimdark ass needed to direct a Superman movie should have been fired.

Snyder hates certain types of comics, namely the silver age Superman that Superman is most famous for. His favorites are Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, and he's always been pretty up front about that. For Snyder, things aren't good unless they suck, because things being good is unrealistic. So instead of trying to work with the overall positive source material, he decided every comic book movie has to be Watchmen. It worked great for Watchmen, didn't work out so well for Man of Steel, and worked out for BvS pretty well, but only the non Superman parts--and that's predominantly because The Dark Knight Returns has a lot in common in terms of tone / atmosphere with Watchmen.

I think if you made a movie depicting Superman as this politician's lackey that he is in DK Returns, most people would be furious.

I think he did the best he could but he should be making movies like Knightfall and Injustice and maybe leave the main story up to someone else that doesn't have a raging hate boner for comics where things don't suck.
