The irony is PepsiCo has gotten more free publicity from this ad and it's backlash than they ever would have gotten paying networks to run the ad in the first place.

And overall, when it comes to Pepsi and Coke, why do they even run ads? Is there anyone in the world that isn't living in a grass hut that is unaware of these products to begin with? Has any lifelong Coke drinker ever once seen a Pepsi ad and switched?

When you have well established brands like Coke, advertising stops being about product awareness and becomes more about maintaining 'Mere Exposure Effect', and preventing other brands from doing the same by (for example) spending money to take that ad slot over a competitor and jacking up the price of ad space in general.

When you see an ad for Coke, it's not a brand awareness campaign, it's a brand unawareness campaign.
