I think part of it may be that the advent of cyber-bullying has allowed situations similar to what has been happening in Japan for decades. Time and time again, the most damaging bullying has never come from the frequency of the bullying or the severity of the pranks themselves (I mean, unless said pranks are especially bad, of course), but from the number of peers involved. In Japan, bullying is typically the entire class getting roped into targeting one person, leaving that person feeling like he can't even go to a friend in order to receive support. That's where the threat of suicide begins. Social media allows students now, more than ever, to become involved in that same type of bullying where a large group of peers targets the one student.
