Yeah I'd definitely believe that. Common logic says they would explain to the flight attendants that their seats were occupied, then the flight attendant would go wake up said passenger (since it isn't necessarily the couple's responsibility), then all would be right with the world.

This story is fishy. Granted, the airlines could show some damn leniency and say like yeah bro nobody's in these seats so go for it. This hardly called for disembarking any passengers (except maybe the sleeping guy if he was refusing to move or something, but it sounds like the guy was blissfully asleep the entire time and had no idea anything happened).
