According to this NPR article, https://goo.gl/aHe42y, they supposedly complied with the flight attendant but was later removed.

"After sitting, Hohl said a flight attendant approached and asked if they were in their ticketed seats. The couple explained they weren't and asked if they could get an upgrade, but instead they were told they needed to return to their assigned seats.

"Hohl said after complying with the flight attendant's demand, a U.S. marshal came onto the plane and asked them to get off.

"The couple cooperated and got off the plane without incident, but they still don't understand why."

Too much of this was from Hohl's point of view so I'm not 100% convince the story adds up correctly. Why would they be removed after complying with the flight attendant?

According to a statement from United, they did not comply with the flight attendant.

"These passengers repeatedly attempted to sit in upgraded seating which they did not purchase and they would not follow crew instructions to return to their assigned seats."

And also, side note - who sprawls across THREE seats!?

I was baffled by this as well. The couples were last to board so maybe that passenger assumed the seats were empty and decided to take all of them. That would still be odd though as he would have to wake up anyway for the take-off as I believe the airliner want passengers properly seated and buckled during take-off and landing.
