you have an assigned seat on a flight. you aren't supposed to just go sit where ever you want

Some airlines are more lenient with this. I frequently fly on a route where there are less-than-full flights and the flight attendants give everyone a chance to move seats if they like at the start of the flight (sometimes they actually ask people to move around due to weight distribution issues). It all depends on who you're flying with.

Funny enough my troop and I flew back from Hawaii in 2015 via United Airlines. It was a late night July 4th flight and only half the plane was filled. Even before we took off we were allowed to sit wherever after the door was closed.
