House elves aren't supposed to use magic or something. not with wands, which dobby didn't use one. the explanation given was that magic was "detected" there, which means it could have been anyone, but since only harry was supposed to be there, it must have been him. and this was later abandoned until...order, i think, when harry used the patronus spell to stop some dementors from killing his cousin. then it became a big deal that he used magic at home again --- We all need heroes, don't we?
