It's a sensitive point in Canada because it was considered socially acceptable for white kids to pretend to be Indians at a time when actual Indians were being beaten (sometimes to death) and sexually assaulted in residential schools in an effort to force them to stop being Indians. That was extremely recent (the last residential school closed in 1996), and is still having extremely negative effects on First Nations communities (a large portion of which are experiencing widespread mental health crises as a result), so being so ignorant of that reality is definitely insensitive.
