It was a very good idea for a film. But in practice, and I suppose watching it for the first time in the present day, in a way it felt a bit melodramatic. "Ahh! My life is a lie! Everyone is in on it! I have to escape!"
His entire life is literally a lie. His parents, his wife and his best friend have been lying to him every minute of his existence. How else did you expect him to act?
I wish there were more existential exploration. He didn't really react quite as distraught as he should have. Like, as long as he can escape, then everything is fine? Then what happens? He knows nothing of the outside world or what his purpose in life is. He has no legitimate friends or family. There's a lot more implied with the situation than what's presented and explored. Actually, if done well, a sequel would have been great. What happens with him after the show?
