First off, somebody who doesn't realize they're banned is going to figure it out pretty quickly so you aren't gaining time (and then what happens? They just switch to another account). Second, it means leaving parts of their profile active so people don't know that they're banned, which makes it confusing for everybody else. Third, it allows people to troll by claiming that somebody has been banned which can't be easily verified (in addition to other problems with non-transparent punishment).
