You probably shouldn't change course on a storyline at the first sign of fan discontent if you're confident in your ability to pay it off in the future, but there's also no reason to stubbornly persist in going in a direction that is clearly not working. Eventually you've just gotta mercy kill it for your own sake. I agree that there's no reason for companies to ever be so out of touch that that's necessary, but that's probably not realistic.
