It's also a tradition in some cultures that dates back to Rome/Greece, where you had to pay the boatmen on the River Styx two coins to take you into the underworld.

In ancient Rome/Greece, yes. Traditions evolve and change over that much time, however. Like I said, I could be wrong, but it might be related to that tradition.
