Yes, I do enjoy living in the state with one of the top five educational systems in the US and a number of the most affluent counties in the entire nation.

And yet somehow it's responsible for my stupidest relatives. Of course, one of them escaped that fate -- by going to high school in NY -- but the remaining five never even went to college, making them the only five in the last three generations on that side of my family to not hold a college degree of any sort. It's a rather dubious honor.

However, I should note that the same lists which put NJ top 5 or top 10 put CT over it and, quite honestly, CT's educational system (save for some of our colleges, because we're home to Yale and UConn) is lackluster at best.

Also, I enjoy the benefits of having some of the cheapest fuel costs in the entire country and still having every store or service I can possibly imagine ever needing to use within 20 minutes driving distance of my home (as opposed to having to drive 30 minutes for groceries and an hour just to watch a movie).

Humorously enough, the cost of fuel was actually *worse* down there the day I visited but, in general, I assume it *has* to be better than CT on average considering that CT has one of the highest gas taxes in the nation.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - from my experience, most of the New Jersey bashing you hear is either rooted in jealousy or ignorance. It's basically become the stupid meme that everyone repeats because they heard other people say it before,

...and yet it's mostly people from the tri-state area mocking it, not some corn huskers from Nebraska or... um, alligators from Florida.

I've considered moving before (the money I'd make from selling my house here could basically buy me a freaking mansion in most other states), but I can't imagine ever actually wanting to LIVE in most other states. For all the flaws the state may actually have, it's counterbalanced by way too many benefits and conveniences.

If I didn't work in New England, I certainly wouldn't "choose" to live in New England. The taxes are obscene and the weather is terrible. Granted, I'll take CT over Jersey any day of the week despite hating my state's government.

We've got backwoods hillbillies and inner-city trash, rich businessmen and celebrities, and most things in-between. There's a ton of diversity in the state, yet most people are either judging on tiny parts of the state that don't really reflect the whole, or are just repeating jokes people came up with 50+ years ago that haven't been true for decades.

I'm sure someday I'll find a *nice* part of the state. Most of my friends, relatives, etc, all live in the north, though, which is nothing short of a dreadful region.

My condolences.
