Every time I see a screenshot of a weapon in Destiny 2, I cannot stop myself from looking at it from a mechanical engineering viewpoint.

Case in point, this screenshot of a rocket launcher: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DJZs2oDU8AAQ7vf.jpg

I look at that and my immediate question is: what purpose does the globe around the barrel serve? My first thought is that is serves as a heat shield and dissipation mechanism for the exhaust of the launcher thereby allowing the launcher to be fired more often and more quickly.

Now, I have not seen the weapon in action, and I could be mixing up my games here, but I vaguely remember rocket launchers in the first game requiring manual reload into the front of the launcher kinda like an RPG.

Given that modern day RPGs don't require an excessively large heat sink/shield, I have to conclude that the globe here serves no actual use and is merely there do to the "Rule of Cool" but I don't think it looks very cool.
