Today's XKCD is on point

...is a statement which has never been true at any point in history.

XKCD is like an alternate universe Saturday Morning Breakfast cereal that takes itself seriously and is often up its own ass.

There are definitely parallels between the two, but I'd say that the main difference is that SMBC is only occasionally pretentious or annoying, whereas Randall Munroe comes across like an alien who only barely understands what it means to be human, and who spends nearly all of his time oscillating between overly pretentious jacking off over how much he loves science and math and overly pretentious emo-teen pseudophilosophical musing.

Though to be fair, I'm basing my opinion there on what SMBC used to be, because I haven't read it in years. It's entirely possible that it's reached douche-chill levels of cringe on its own over the last few years or so, so they're both equally terrible. But SMBC was always at its best when it was focusing on pop culture and at its worst when it was going the science nerd route.
