Because maintaining continuous employment is common sense, particularly because 99% of the population needs regular income to survive. And, if you leave one company for the next, the reason is self-explanatory. However, if you quit a job or get fired, there's usually a story.

Plus there's the underlying suspicion among employers that, if you can't hack it at one company, you probably won't last at theirs. Very few employers want to take on employees who might not last long.
