A blood clot will form over the bone when the tooth is removed. If you don't disturb the clot, you'll be okay. They will give you a little squirty thing that'll shoot water into your empty sockets so you can clean the area gently. Don't chew stuff there or bother it with things that aren't gentle, and don't suck too hard on anything. You could disturb and dislodge that blood clot.

If you do, it'll expose your bone directly. That's apparently horrifyingly painful, lasts several days to weeks, and no amount of medicine dulls the pain. That's what I've been told anyway. I didn't get dry socket.
