TopicIs GTAV an acceptable "GOTY 2015" because of its PC release date?

I'm his friend. My position is that if a game isn't a straight port and if it adds something, it's eligible to be GotY even though ultimately, it's as much of a contender as other games released that year that are completely new. This idea is not new for me: I hated GTA: SA on PS2 when I played it shortly after release in 2004 (it just ran poorly and the controls were awful imo) but I love it on PC in 2005 and it's easily my 2005 GotY and one of my top 5 games overall. In regards to GTA V specifically, it's my 2015 GotY because it came to PC that year, added better graphics, you can mod it, there are some PC-only features, and I didn't really play anything else that year.

I also consider Minecraft to be my GotY for 2011 despite it being playable since 2009 and me buying the beta in 2010 and playing it heavily before its release date.

All that said, in general, I have a lax attitude about GotY: If you want to call SMB3 GotY because you played it this year for the first time, that doesn't bother me at all. I'll disagree, but I say do whatever you want for GotY. As far as what I have to say about it for my standards, allow me to answer this question with a question:

Would Super Mario Bros. 3 be an acceptable GotY for 2007 (Wii), 2014 (3DS and WiiU)?

That depends. Did it add anything new?
