It starts off standard but really slow, gets okay around chapter 2 or 3, then devolves into an AoE spam fest for the last few chapters and all of the best AoE have long animations (turbo mode helps this a lot). SC fixes that to an extent for the majority of the game by better balancing the enemies. It still kind of becomes an AoE spam fest toward the end though. 3rd I've had no problems with so far combat wise and I'm pretty sure I'm getting near the end (I'm on chapter 6). Much better designed combat. All of this just applies mostly to random battles though. I've never had a problem with the bosses.
