37. Lee Everett (The Walking Dead)

"Keep that hair short."

The Walking Dead Telltale series is the story of Clementine's life and personal growth in a crap zombie-filled world. Personally, I never really cared about that, which is why Walking Dead as a game series essentially ended for me after the end of Season 1. Lee is what kept me invested in the game, and Lee is what I remember the most when I think back on it. The final scene of Season 1 will stay in my memories for a long time.

It's a bit hard to get a handle on Lee as a character considering you can play him so many different ways, but in a different sense, that shows the kind of person that Lee is. Lee is someone struggling with himself. He killed a man befoe the game even started (in a crime of passion, but yeah), and then the zombie apocalypse hits, and then he has to take care of this little girl he's never met before while dealing with the rest of the survivors and it never stops. Lee can be a lot of different people. He can be the idealist trying to leave his past behind and make the best out of an awful situation. He can be the stone-cold realist that punches a dude to death with his bare hands to make sure they never harm his crew ever again. Lee ends up being sympathetic and memorable no matter which path you take, an impressive feat of writing that most games with optional dialogue don't manage to pull off.

The one constant in Lee's personality is Clementine. Whether it's due to wanting to atone for his past crimes, or a simple case of paternal care, Lee is always there for Clementine. He protects her and teaches her about the world. The zombie apocalypse doesn't have much mercy for kids (as the game shows), and Lee knows that Clementine needs all the help she can get to survive. Lee's actions outside of Clementine also inform her development - no matter what you do, Clementine Will Remember That, even (especially) if it's you shanking a guy with a pitchfork. Their relationship is by far the highlight of the game. It also helps that Lee's actor is phenomenal and plays him really well. That's slightly important in a game that is more or less a 3D visual novel.

And seriously Clem. Keep that hair short.
