"STOP WHINING!"

That line isn't indicative of Laphicet's personality whatsoever, but it's the most memorable line in the game so I can't not use it.

Laphicet might have the best story arc in Tales of Berseria. In another game he would be the clear #1, but Tales of Berseria has some stiff competition. He gets inducted into the main party via forced kidnapping, which is...different. Laphicet doesn't appear to be an important character whatsoever. The fact that he was chosen as a hostage is completely random - it could have happened to a number of other people in the vicinity. Well, I say 'people' loosely. Laphicet is a Malak, a kind of spirit that has been enslaved for the purposes of others. So he goes from enslavement that subjugates his personality into being an emotionless doll, to being kidnapped as a hostage and taken along by the people that were trying to kill him 2 seconds ago. Fun times!

The fact that meeting him is such a chance encounter is part of what makes Laphicet special. When you first meet him, Laphicet is starting at 0. His name in the party is literally "Number 2" because that's what he was called. Over the course of Berseria you get to see Laphicet gain an incredible amount of character development and become a fully formed, sentient being. The rest of the party devotes a lot of time to helping Laphicet form his personality, leading to a lot of nice scenes of them teaching him the ways of the world (in their own special way). He gives back, too, eventually rejecting his new role as Velvet's replacement for Laphi and helping Velvet overcome her grief as a result. He becomes intelligent, resourceful, empathetic, and even a badass at times. Not bad for someone who was initially given a serial number instead of a name.

If I have one complaint about Laphicet, it's that the ending he gets is...kind of weird. Not really a knock against his character but I'm not sure why they did that. His voice actor is also questionable sometimes, but they nail all the important lines so I can forgive it.

Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
