Clannad conceptually works better as a VN. Drama, SoL, comedy, with drama taking the big part of the pie. There's a lot more time and antics spent with the characters for you get vested into. You could sample/demo the anime for a few episodes to see if it's to your liking.

I suppose it's outdated compared to modern anime, conceptually and artistically, especially since VN adaptations are a real dying breed.

My friend told me playing clannad first instead of watching the anime is the true otaku way, and I somehow feel proud to have achieved it especially early when I actually got into anime. Also, the 2nd piece of media I've ever felt moved me to tears.
