Coming out of high school, I was a lot like her. Really smart, decent grades, been told my whole life "you have to go to college." I said fuck that and didn't - became a secretary in the military instead. Ended up where I am today as I figured it out. Elite employer, six-figure income in 30s, zero debt. Government paid for both my degrees. If you're smart and motivated you'll figure your shit out eventually. You added an intermediate step in there, and it worked out well for you.
