Not studded leather (that's mainly leather with smaller metal studs, hence the name), and not really splint mail (those tend to be metal strips rather than molded plates), and definitely not plate mail (which is generally overlapping metal plates entirely). iirc, some variations on the brigandine used exterior molded plates instead of either layered or interior.
