It can be tough to make it in California. The job centers and nice cities are super expensive, while commuting from a decent suburb is like having a second, part-time job. There's plenty of space but not enough housing and not enough water. Lots of people are unhappy, yet far fewer than 50% of them actually end up moving, and net migration into the state is so large that CA's total population is still growing faster (in percentage terms) than most other states.

People complain, but CA's primary problem is that the demand to live here far outstrips what the housing market and ecosystem can support.
