Baccano!

An overall very mediocre show with some high points that tricked some people (including me) into thinking that it was very good. I know for a fact that, like Lucky Star, if I went and watched this series again right now I would struggle to ever get through it and the score that I gave to Baccano! in the past would fall faster than a colony being dropped on earth from outer space.

First of all I want to talk about the fact that the story feels more or less incomplete. It is structured in a way that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. They are roughly told in order, too, aside from the jumping around. But the issue is that huge portions of the story feel disconnected and some of them get almost no resolution or just get sudden endings that don't amount to anything. I remember having this impression when I originally watched it, but at the time I was more enamored by the "cool moments" and didn't let this bother me. There are even some OVAs that you can watch that I thought would explain the story a bit more. No, this is not the case. It's more random stuff happening that involves some of the same characters.

Next... the characters, characterization, and those oft praised "cool moments." This is something I realized when I tried to watch DRRR!!!! and couldn't even get through that series. It's something the author does and it just bugs me too much to let it go. Essentially this series just has a bunch of cool looking characters doing cool stuff for absolutely no reason. If you asked me why a bunch of people started killing each other on a train in Baccano! I honestly could not tell you. It's something that just sort of happened because it needed to. Did 'Rail Tracer' start killing people before or after they started killing each other? I don't even remember, and it doesn't matter -- either way his motivations make no sense. Why does Jaccuzi run at that guy and do a badass headbutt at the end of the series? Why wouldn't he have done this any of the 50 other times he was in danger before that? It wasn't a moment that was marked by any kind of character development. It was just a very static, shallow character doing something different than usual and with seemingly no explanation. And that's Baccano! in a nutshell. What's up with Chane? Do we know anything about her aside from the fact that she's a cute girl who can't talk? Why is she like some kind of master assassin and why do these abilities almost never come into play? Why bother including her in light of this fact???? Don't even bother trying to pretend that she has a complete story or character arc. She just does not. And there's about 5 or 10 too many characters in Baccano! who this statement can apply to. Combining this with the incredibly deep roster of characters involved in plots that don't even intersect with each other and you're left with a jumbled mess.
