I agree with fool about fast travel hiding bad level design. Using Metroid Prime as an example, which has a ton of backtracking, each room had tons of secrets, led to new areas, or had new ways of traversing them each time the game had you going through them again. For me it never felt like a hassel because it always felt slightly different or maybe there was an artifact hiding in plain sight I missed. Too many games lack that attention to detail when designing rooms.
