They pretend like you can totally use the menu based combat options if you want... But they went out of their way to make it so annoying and cumbersome that you're essentially forced to use the real time combat. And that means you're forced to let the computer control your party. I hate games where the computer controls my party and I can't stop it. Its why I don't like 13 or 15.
