It's just a clever premise and a fun movie. He picked Nazis as his target for the exact same reason this guy did, because Nazis are the thing that society thinks is the absolute worst, and that if you substitute the absolute worst thing with "something that's generally pretty bad according to most people" you lose a lot of the effect. If instead of Nazis, the Producers had "Springtime for Genghis Khan" it wouldn't be nearly as funny.
