Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think what Leon is saying is he does not like the ending because he does not like the way Ellie is treated. Regardless of whether it makes sense, he wishes that something else had happened. He has an emotional connection to that character and wanted better for her. I have felt that way with other characters in other stories. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Yep, that's exactly it. I would've been fine with a "bleak" ending.
