I draw a distinction between "condiment chilli" and "meal chilli". If you're putting it on something like burgers or hot dogs, no beans is probably for the better. If you're doing a chilli Mac or cup of chilli as a main or side dish, then yes beans make sense.

As a condiment, feel free to get weird with it. Make it hot, make it with weird ingredients, let the recipient figure out how much they should have on their own...but if it's a significant portion of the actual meal it should by necessity be edible on it's own for 4/5 people.
