The weird thing about Tigre's plot is that it really isn't anywhere close to the perfect crime and yet he almost got away with it anyway. He screws up so many of the details, but he was thorough in covering up his own tracks almost entirely through sheer intimidation. i mean also the fact that investigation is a joke (literally letting tigre be phoenix) and that a month has already gone by most murders in AA land are still fresh when the protagonists dig their teeth in it's more the silliness of the case circumstances than tigre's intimidation that lets him almost win annoyed me my first time through but i enjoy the case way more in hindsight --- yet all sailors of all sorts are more or less capricious and unreliable - they live in the varying outer weather, and they inhale its fickleness ...
