As annoying as those memes were, I am sticking to my guns here: People just love Knuckles. If anything I believe he would have gotten stronger in the past 5 years. Not much, but a little. The general meme-i-ness of the current internet is good for Sonic characters in general. Except Tails. Knuckles is probably another Yoshi/Frog case where people love it more than the main character from their respective series, but turns out to be weaker than the main character in the contests. The closest thing to any Sonic series character poll was this poll from 2001: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/581- And that's only for the Sonic Adventure series alone, not the entire series as a whole.
