I was very impressed by Infinity's 2nd best of all time opening day (as well I should have been), but turns out that was just a light warmup lap. After losing Friday to The Force Awakens, Avengers destroyed Star Wars by $14 million on Saturday, then bested it by a further $9 million on Sunday. All told that comes to a weekend total of $258 million, easily topping the old mark of 248. And it wasn't just a world-beating hit in North America- the movie smashed weekend records in nearly every country for a combined total of over $640 million. That tops the old record for a worldwide total... by 100 million. Amazingly it accomplished all that without opening in China (now the second most important market on the globe) or Russia (also a pretty big one). Next on the horizon: trying to stay over $150 million next time out, to beat Star Wars for biggest second weekend.
